If you report marketing results, you need to explain how an appearance in an AI answer differs from a visit to your website. A brand can appear in answers all week without receiving more website visits. Visibility measures appearances; traffic measures visits. Reporting one does not establish the other.
Why an appearance may not lead to a visit
The steps between an answer and a sale each lose people, and only the first is visible to a visibility tool.
- A person asks an assistant a question.
- The answer names your brand or cites your page. This is what visibility tracking measures.
- The person reads the answer and may be satisfied by it.
- They may follow a link, or search your name separately, or remember it for later, or do nothing.
- They arrive on your site, possibly days later and by another route.
- They buy, or they do not.
Step three is the one that makes this channel different from search. A good answer can fully resolve the question, and the better the answer, the less need there is to click anything. Being cited in a summary that satisfies the reader is a real outcome with no visit attached.
Why visits are difficult to attribute to AI answers
Three things break the usual measurement.
Referrer information is unreliable. Visits that began in an assistant do not consistently identify themselves as such, and what does arrive is inconsistent between services and changes over time.
The path is often indirect. Someone who sees your name in an answer and then searches for your brand arrives as branded search. The assistant caused the visit and the analytics record something else.
The delay can be long. Research and purchase are separated by days or weeks in most considered purchases, and the two sessions are not connected.
So a rise in answer presence and a rise in visits are two observations that may or may not be related, and no tool can join them from outside your analytics.
What no visibility product can tell you
OppAlerts cannot attribute traffic or revenue to AI answers. It does not read your analytics and never sees your visits.
This is worth stating plainly because the category talks around it. One product in the wider market, seoClarity, does sell AI search traffic and conversion tracking, which requires connecting your own analytics. If attribution is your requirement, that is the class of tool to look at, and a tracking product will not substitute.
Any product implying it can prove revenue from AI answers without touching your analytics is describing something that cannot be done from the outside.
What visibility measurement is good for
Three uses, none of which requires attribution.
Presence and absence. Whether you appear at all for the questions your buyers ask. Absence is the clearest finding available and needs no attribution to act on, because a brand named in none of the relevant answers has a definite problem.
Competitive comparison. Whether competitors are named where you are not, across the same prompts. That comparison is fair regardless of what either brand's traffic does.
Which sources answers rely on. The cited pages are a list of places worth appearing on. This is the most directly actionable output of visibility tracking, and it leads to link and placement work rather than to a dashboard.
How to report it honestly
Report answer presence and traffic as two separate series and resist the urge to draw a causal line between them. If both rise, say both rose.
Watch branded search volume alongside them. A rise in branded search while answer presence rises is consistent with the assistant sending people who then search your name. It is the closest thing to a bridge available. It is corroboration and not proof.
For a client report, the defensible framing is that presence in relevant answers is a leading indicator of consideration, measured directly, and that visits are measured separately by analytics. Anyone promising more precision than that is overstating what the channel currently permits.
When reporting to a client or manager, label visibility and traffic separately. You can discuss each result without implying that one proves the other.
