Learn How to Compare AI Search Tool Costs

Before you compare AI tracking prices, you need to understand what each plan counts. A prompt allowance might count questions. Checks or credits might count individual collections. Work out how many answers you'll actually get on the schedule your report needs, then compare the cost.

For example, one hundred prompts on one engine, checked weekly, produce one hundred collections a week. Check the same prompts daily on three engines, and you get 2,100. Same prompt count, twenty-one times as many answers.

Define your questions, engines, and schedule

Write down how many prompts you need, which engines your report must include, and how often you need another observation. For one hundred prompts on three engines, weekly checking gives you about 1,290 collections in an average month, using 4.3 weeks. Daily checking gives you 9,000 in a 30-day month.

You haven't changed the questions. You've changed the schedule. More frequent collection gives you more answers to inspect, so think about the evidence you need to understand variation and how often your team will read it.

The vendor figures below come from research on September 5, 2026. They're examples for understanding the arithmetic and what you're buying. Before you make a purchase, confirm the current plan, billing term, and provider coverage.

Find out what a unit means before converting it

Ahrefs defines a standard check as one prompt tracked on one platform in one location. The researched packages cost $50 for 2,500 checks, $100 for 7,000, and $250 for 25,000. Their respective overage rates are $0.020, $0.015, and $0.010. Claude uses eight checks per update, so include that multiplier if you need Claude.

That gives you a price for an Ahrefs check. It doesn't establish a universal price for an equivalent AI answer, because providers, schedules, and included research differ. Profound Growth's 100 prompts on three engines, collected daily, imply about 9,000 collections in a 30-day month. You still need to read that allowance with the plan's collection rules.

Rankscale's published weekly example uses 162.5 monthly credits for 50 prompts at 0.75 credits per run. Conductor's 2,500 annual credits average about 208 a month. But the researched pages don't define a Conductor credit well enough to treat it as one collected answer. Dividing by twelve can't fill in that missing information.

Multiply a weekly allowance by 4.3 for an approximate monthly comparison. Then go back to the actual weekly limit to check whether your schedule fits. The monthly estimate doesn't change when the allowance renews. Likewise, don't assume unused daily capacity automatically carries forward.

Include everyone and everything needed for the work

User charges can change the total even when collection volumes look similar. In the dated research, Ahrefs includes one user and charges $40, $60, or $80 monthly for extra users, depending on the plan. Frase charges $29 a seat. Scrunch Core includes five licenses; Profound Starter includes one. Peec, Rankscale, AccuRanker, Talkwalker, Hunter, and OppAlerts have no per-user charge in the researched offers.

Engines can also depend on the tier or an add-on. Confirm the exact engine and collection mode in your quote. A logo on the product page isn't enough. Some plans include work you already pay for elsewhere, while others sell those capabilities separately.

For example, the researched Ahrefs Lite, Standard, and Advanced plans include 5, 10, or 20 daily prompts on one platform. Extra custom tracking starts at $50 monthly. The $199 AI Visibility Index is a separate research purchase. In the dated Surfer example, Standard is $99 monthly billed yearly, with content work and 25 weekly prompts. A separate AI Search Analytics offer has 100 daily prompts at $158 monthly billed yearly. Those are different purchases, and you need to confirm the current plans.

Check the differences arithmetic can't resolve

A returned-mention allowance depends on how much matching material comes back. Scheduled calls count collection operations. Source counts can use different units too. The researched claims of 150 million Talkwalker sources, a billion Mention sources, and 140 Serpstat AI models aren't comparable quantities. Check whether the publications and engines you actually need are included.

Ask about sampling separately. One collected answer gives you different evidence from a rate calculated across repeated answers. Find out how many answers go into each reported figure, whether failed attempts use the allowance, and how missing observations appear.

Put a real schedule through the calculation

At one check per collection, that volume fits Ahrefs' researched $100 package with 7,000 checks. You don't need the separate $199 AI Visibility Index. But you still need to check its daily, weekly, or monthly scheduling: enough checks doesn't establish that it supports your twice-weekly schedule.

In the dated Peec tiers, 200 prompts put you over the 150-prompt allowance and into the 350-prompt plan. Collection is daily even if your team reviews less often. The researched Semrush allowance of 200 daily prompts is in the $549 Advanced plan, which also includes keyword tracking and auditing.

For Rankscale, calculate 200 × 3 × 8.6 monthly runs × 0.75 credits. That's about 3,870 credits. Check that requirement against the researched $99 and $385 plans and their applicable allowances.

These calculations tell you which offers to investigate. You still need to compare schedules, tools, and access. Keep the provider list, frequency, unit conversion, seats, and billing term with the quote so someone else can reproduce it.
