If you manage Google's AI search visibility, you need to know which experience a result comes from before deciding how to track it. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews are two separate experiences. Their formats differ, and that decides how you track each one and what you can compare it against.
The two experiences
An AI Overview is a generated summary sitting above the conventional results for a search. The organic list is still underneath it, and the summary carries links to its sources.
AI Mode is a separate conversational experience. It answers a question and lists the sources behind the answer. No page of organic results at all.
Google's own documentation on AI features is where the distinction comes from. Read it directly, because these experiences keep changing.
Consequences for measurement
An AI Overview can be observed next to the organic result for the same keyword, because both sit on one page for one query. In OppAlerts a single Google keyword request returns the organic results, the ads and the AI Overview together, so both measurements arrive from one collection and cost one call.
That opens up a comparison. For any tracked keyword you can see whether you rank organically, whether the overview cited you, and whether those two agree. They often do not.
AI Mode has no organic results beside it, so there is no position to compare anything against. It gets tracked as a prompt and not as a keyword, and its input expects a question and not a keyword phrase.
What the paired measurement gives you
Because the two arrive together, a keyword can rank without being cited, or get cited without ranking. Each combination points at different work. The one to hunt for is a page that is competitive for the query where the summary drew on other sources anyway. AI Overview tracking sets out all four states.
AI Mode gives you no equivalent pairing, because nothing sits beside the answer. What you compare there is presence across runs and which sources got cited. The format supports nothing else.
Mistakes to avoid
Treating them as one metric. A single AI visibility figure blending AI Mode presence with AI Overview citations is describing two different search experiences at once. Ask any product reporting one number which experiences went into it.
Assuming a citation means a visit. An overview that answers the question completely gets read without anybody clicking anything. Being cited is presence and not traffic, covered in why answer visibility is not traffic.
Track each one differently
Track AI Overviews inside your keyword set. They attach to queries you already care about and they arrive with the organic position at no extra cost.
Track AI Mode as questions, written the way a person would ask them and not as keyword phrases. How to select a prompt set covers building one from real buyer questions.
Google adjusts both of them. When a series breaks, consider that the search experience changed before you conclude your standing did.
When setting up a Google visibility report, identify the experience and the unit being tracked. That lets you make comparisons the collected results actually support.
