If you monitor Google's AI answers, you need to record how AI Mode responds to the questions relevant to your business. Google AI Mode is tracked as a prompt rather than as a keyword, because it returns no organic results at all. It answers a question and lists the sources it cited. That single structural fact changes how you set it up and what you can compare it against.
Why AI Mode is tracked as a prompt
A tracked keyword goes to a search engine and returns a results page: organic listings, ads, and for Google an AI Overview. There is a position to record.
AI Mode returns no organic listings. There is no ordered list, so there is no position, and comparing an AI Mode result against a keyword ranking compares two different things.
What it returns instead is an answer and the sources behind it. So the measurements available are whether your brand was named, which sources were cited, and which competitors appeared.
Write questions, not keywords
The input field accepts 700 characters, which tells you what it expects. That is room for a real question with its context, not a keyword phrase.
A keyword-shaped prompt gets a keyword-shaped answer that does not resemble what a person asking properly would see. Write the question the way a buyer would ask it, including the situation that would change the answer.
Weak: commercial cleaning services denver
Better: We lease two floors of an office building in Denver and our current cleaning contractor keeps missing the shared kitchen areas. How do we find a replacement and what should the contract cover?
The second is what someone with the problem types, and the answer to it is what your buyer sees.
AI Mode and AI Overviews are not the same measurement
This is the confusion most worth avoiding, because both are Google experiences with generated answers.
An AI Overview appears above the conventional results for a search, so it can be observed alongside the organic position for that keyword. In OppAlerts it arrives as part of a Google keyword request, which returns the organic results, the ads and the overview together in one call.
AI Mode is a separate experience with its own collection, tracked as a prompt.
Keep them separate in reporting. Blending them into one Google visibility figure combines two search experiences that behave differently, and the blended number cannot be acted on. The distinction is set out in how AI Mode and AI Overviews differ.
The comparison worth setting up
Because AI Overviews attach to keywords you already track, and AI Mode answers questions, you can cover the same subject from both directions.
Track the keyword for the AI Overview, and track the question version of the same need as an AI Mode prompt. Where you are cited in one and absent from the other, the cited sources of each show which material is doing the work.
That is a practical use of two collections on one subject, and it costs one keyword call plus one prompt call per ticked day.
Reading the cited sources
The source list is the actionable output. For a question where you want to appear, those pages are demonstrably being used to answer your buyers.
Work through them with three questions: whether you appear on the page, whether what it says about you is current, and whether it accepts submissions or corrections.
A comparison article listing competitors and not you is a placement opportunity with a known audience. An out-of-date description is a correction request. Both are more specific than any general instruction to improve authority.
What to expect from the series
Answers vary between runs, and Google changes these search experiences. A change in the series may reflect an AI Mode update rather than a change in your visibility. Check whether it appears across many prompts before attributing it to your brand.
Read presence across weeks rather than reacting to a single collection.
What it does not establish
No position, because there is no list. No traffic attribution, because an answer that resolves the question needs no click. And no explanation of source selection, which is not observable from outside.
During your AI Mode review, examine the recorded answers and cited pages for your tracked questions. You can then assign research based on a specific result.
