If you review Google visibility, you need to distinguish an organic position from a reference inside an AI Overview. Google keyword tracking returns organic results and AI Overview information together. Keyword History lets you inspect Overview references separately from the ordinary search positions.
Set it up
Enter the keyword under Track Keywords, select Google with AI Overview, and choose the days you want fresh results. The Google request covers both result types.
That means Overview coverage costs no additional call. If you already track five hundred keywords, you already have Overview observations for five hundred keywords.
The four combinations
Because both arrive together, each keyword falls into one of four states, and they imply different work.
| Organic | Cited in Overview | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Ranking | Yes | The page serves the query and is used to answer it. Nothing to fix. |
| Ranking | No | Competitive for the query; the summary used other sources. The productive case. |
| Not ranking | Yes | Useful as a source despite the ranking. Worth noticing. |
| Not ranking | No | Absent from the query. A content question. |
The second row is the most common and is invisible unless you compare the two measurements, which is the reason to track them together.
Working the ranking-but-not-cited case
A page that ranks and is not cited is already relevant enough to compete, so something specific is missing.
Read the Overview and its references, then compare the cited pages with yours: whether they answer the question directly, whether they cover the narrower question the summary actually resolved, and whether they are third-party sites rather than vendor pages. Where the Overview consistently cites review sites and roundups, editing your own page will not change the outcome. Following the citations works through each of those checks.
Investigate the cited page
An organic result can appear without an Overview citation, and a cited page can differ from the organic page you expected.
If a competitor's guide is cited, inspect what information it provides and check whether your own page answers the same question accurately and completely. The citation identifies a source to review. It does not reveal Google's selection method, which is not observable from outside.
Keep AI Mode separate
Google AI Mode is selected under Track AI Prompts. It uses the prompt history and its own provider selection.
An AI Mode observation and an Overview attached to a keyword search are separate collected results. Blending them into one Google visibility figure combines two search experiences that behave differently, and the blended number cannot be acted on.
Reading changes
Overviews do not appear for every query, and whether one appears can change. A keyword that had an Overview last month and does not this month has not necessarily changed in importance.
If a shift appears across many keywords at once, that is more likely a change to the search experience than a change in your standing. Check the breadth of a movement before explaining it.
During keyword review, record which result changed and inspect the relevant page before assigning a content update.
