AI Citations, Mentions and Recommendations: What Each Means

An AI answer can mention your brand, recommend it or cite a page. Learn how to distinguish those results and choose the right content, correction or publication research.

If you turn AI answer research into marketing work, you need to know whether the result names your business, recommends it or links to a source. Three things can happen to a brand in an AI answer, and they lead to different work. Reports that combine them into one number hide the difference.

The three results

A mention means the brand is named. Nothing more is implied: an answer naming you as an option and an answer naming you as the one to avoid both contain a mention.

A citation means a page is referenced as a source the answer drew on.

A recommendation means the brand is presented as suitable under the conditions of the question, which is narrower than a mention and depends on how the answer is phrased.

A named brand and a cited source can differ

The page cited and the brand named are usually different parties.

An answer recommending your product will frequently cite a review site, an industry roundup, a comparison article or a forum thread rather than your own website. The assistant is pointing at where it found the information, and that is rarely the vendor.

Two consequences follow, and they are the reason to separate these measurements.

A brand can be named constantly and never cited. Your product is well known enough to appear in answers, and the pages carrying that reputation belong to other people.

A website can be cited constantly in answers that never name its owner. Your guide to a subject is a useful source, and the answers built on it recommend other companies.

What each result tells you to do

What you observeWhat it meansThe work that follows
Named often, own site rarely citedYour reputation lives on third-party pagesFind which pages are cited and make sure you are represented accurately on them
Site cited often, brand rarely namedYou are a source, not a candidateCheck that the cited pages make clear what you sell, not only what you know
Named unfavorablyThe framing is the problem, not absenceRead the answers, find where the framing comes from, and address it there
Absent entirelyNeither known nor sourced for this questionContent and placement work, starting from the pages that are cited

The cited sources are the most useful output

For a question where you want to appear, the list of pages the answers cite is a research result in itself. Those pages are demonstrably being used to answer your buyers' questions.

That gives a specific target list rather than a general instruction to build authority. For each cited page, check whether it names you, whether its description is current, and whether the publisher accepts submissions, updates or corrections.

A roundup listing eight competitors and not you is a placement opportunity with a known audience. An out-of-date review is a correction request. A resource list is a submission.

This is where citation tracking connects to prospecting work, and it is the reason the two belong in the same campaign.

What a citation does not establish

  • Not endorsement. A page can be cited as an example of a poor option.
  • Not traffic. An answer that resolves the question needs no click.
  • Not stability. Answers vary between runs, so a citation in one run is an observation rather than a fixed state.
  • Not the full retrieval. Some services distinguish what they read from what they showed, so a cited list is not necessarily everything consulted.

Reading a report properly

Check whether an AI visibility report counts mentions and citations separately. Confirm that it distinguishes citations of your domain from citations of third-party pages discussing you. Also check how many runs the figures describe.

A report combining all of it into one visibility percentage has thrown away the information that tells you what to do next.

When assigning follow-up work, identify which result you observed and save the answer. That helps you choose between investigating the description, recommendation or cited source.

Let’s discuss how we can work together.

An industry report, a custom dataset, a partnership; a couple of sentences is plenty. Every message comes straight to me, and I read all of them.

If it’s a fit, you’ll hear back quickly with next steps or a time to talk.
