See Which Sources Tracked AI Answers Cite

Research the pages behind tracked AI answers with OppAlerts. Distinguish cited pages from other sources the provider reports when choosing publications or content to review.

If you research AI visibility, you need to find the sources that could inform your next content or publication task. AI Answer Sources lists the domains cited in your tracked answers. Where the provider reports it, the report also shows the pages read while the answer was being produced, and the searches it ran.

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode each get their own view. The report reads tracked answers across the whole account, so picking a campaign narrows the labels and not the underlying collection.

Cited and read are two different observations

A citation is a reference shown with the answer. A page can be read, feed the answer, and never appear in that reference list. Comparing the Cited and Read columns shows you the gap between them.

Google AI Mode gives references with no matching read list. Some of its references name a publisher instead of giving a URL.

When source information is missing, that tells you the service did not report its sources. It does not tell you the service read none. From outside, the second thing is unknowable.

The cited pages are your target list

Take a question you want to appear in. The pages cited in its answers are being used to answer your buyers right now. That beats any general instruction to go and build authority, because it names the pages.

Go through each one and ask three things.

  • Are you on it? A roundup listing eight competitors and not you is a placement with an audience you already know is right.
  • Is what it says about you current? An out-of-date description is a correction request. Fastest win available, and you are doing the publisher a favor.
  • Does it take submissions, updates or corrections? A resource list with a suggestion form is one job. An article by an author who left is another.

The list is usually short enough to work through in an afternoon.

Read the publication before you decide what to do

Open a cited guide and see which question it answers and how well. A thorough one tells you something about your own content. A publication covering your market may also take contributions or run research you could join.

Then look across the whole set. When the same domains keep appearing under different prompts, those are the publications your market's questions get answered from. Build a relationship with them once instead of chasing individual placements.

What a citation does not establish

The source list tells you where to look. It does not tell you that getting onto one of those pages will produce a future citation, and nothing you can observe from outside would tell you that.

A citation is also not approval. An answer can cite a page as an example of a bad option. And it is not traffic: an answer that settles the question needs no click.

When choosing a source to investigate, keep the cited passage and its relevance to the buyer’s question together.

Let’s discuss how we can work together.

An industry report, a custom dataset, a partnership; a couple of sentences is plenty. Every message comes straight to me, and I read all of them.

If it’s a fit, you’ll hear back quickly with next steps or a time to talk.
