If you are responsible for AI search visibility, you need to understand which sources inform the answers your buyers receive. Every question you want to appear in has a set of pages the answers cite. Those pages are being used to answer your buyers. Treat the list as your research targets.
Build the list
Take the questions your buyers ask and collect the answers over several weeks. Then read the cited sources across the whole set, not answer by answer.
The same domains keep coming back. That recurring list is where your market's questions get answered from, and it is shorter than people expect. Short enough to work through.
Ask three things of every page
- Do you appear on it at all?
- Is what it says about you current?
- Does it take submissions, updates or corrections?
You get three different jobs out of that, with different effort and different odds.
| What you find | Task | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| An out-of-date description of your product | Correction request | Lowest. You are doing them a favor. |
| A roundup listing competitors and not you | Submission or pitch against stated criteria | Moderate, and the audience is already right |
| A resource list with a suggestion form | Submission | Low, if you fit the list |
| An article by a departed author on a dead site | Skip | Nobody there will act on it |
Do the corrections first. They are short, they land often, and a wrong fact sitting on a widely cited page gets copied into every answer built from it.
Check the page type before you pitch
A published article is not a submission page. With no mechanism you are asking somebody to edit a live page as a favor, and that needs a relationship most people do not have.
Where several competitors turn up together, go find the condition all of them met. Sometimes it is written down. Otherwise you can work it out from what the listed companies have in common. If they are all enterprise products and you sell to small teams, you are absent for a good reason.
Where the work actually goes
The page cited and the brand named are usually two different parties. An answer recommending your product will often cite a review site and not your website.
So when the cited sources for your questions are consistently third-party pages, editing your own site changes nothing about what the answers say. Reading the citations is the only way to see that, and it redirects an entire content plan.
Measuring whether it worked
Watch for the pages you got onto starting to appear as cited sources. It takes weeks and it is the honest measurement.
Do not expect a sudden jump, and do not claim one if it happens. Answers vary run to run, and no work guarantees a citation, because nobody controls the services.
When planning content or outreach, review the cited pages for a relevant contribution your business can make. That gives the work a specific audience and purpose.
