If you are comparing these products for SEO work, you need to distinguish link and site analysis from prospect research and AI tracking. Ahrefs is a backlink and SEO platform that added AI answer tracking through Brand Radar. OppAlerts is an AI search and prospecting product that also stores backlink data. The two overlap on links, keyword positions and AI prompts, and they price all three differently.
OppAlerts publishes this comparison. No claim is made here about which backlink index is larger, because neither was measured.
Ahrefs has the larger crawl and the deeper history, provides an API and MCP on every plan, and charges for each person who logs in. OppAlerts carries one campaign definition into every report and does not sell seats.
AI prompt tracking is priced separately at Ahrefs
This is the part most buyers misread. The Ahrefs plans include tracked AI prompts, but only 5 on Lite, 10 on Standard and 20 on Advanced. Tracking a real prompt set means adding Brand Radar, which starts from $199 a month, and then a custom prompt package on top of that.
Ahrefs defines the unit those packages sell in a way that maps almost exactly onto the OppAlerts allowance: tracking one prompt, on one platform, in one location uses one check. Packages run $50 a month for 2,500 checks, $100 for 7,000 and $250 for 25,000, with overage billed at $0.020, $0.015 and $0.010 a check.
OppAlerts uses a comparable counting unit. One call is one tracked prompt or keyword, on one provider, on one day. Because both products meter the same thing, you can compare them directly once you fix the workload. A hundred prompts on three providers, five days a week, is 1,500 calls a week, or roughly 6,500 checks a month in Ahrefs terms. That fits within its 7,000-check Growth package, before the base plan cost.
Do that arithmetic before comparing the headline plan prices. Ahrefs prices prompt tracking separately from its base plans.
Where Ahrefs is stronger
- Crawl and index scale. Plans include 100,000 to 1,500,000 crawl credits and Ahrefs describes more than ten years of web-scale data. OppAlerts does not publish a comparable crawl figure and this page makes no claim about which backlink index is larger.
- Historical depth, at 6 months, 2 years and 5 years by plan, with unlimited history on Enterprise.
- Site Audit. OppAlerts does not audit websites at all.
- API and MCP access on every plan, including Lite, with a published request rate. Both products expose both; the OppAlerts versions are read-only and publish no allowance yet.
- An AI Visibility Index that reports any brand's visibility with no setup, which is useful for researching a prospect or a competitor you have not configured.
- Link prospecting. Brand Radar advertises tracking web mentions and finding link prospects, so this is not a job only OppAlerts does.
Where the products are structured differently
| Ahrefs | OppAlerts | |
|---|---|---|
| Users | 1 included; extras at $40, $60 or $80 a month each | Not sold by the seat |
| AI prompts | 5, 10 or 20 on plan; more through Brand Radar and packages | Prompt count not separately capped; the weekly call allowance is the limit |
| Keyword tracking | 750, 2,000 or 5,000 tracked keywords | Google and Bing keywords drawn from the same call allowance as prompts |
| Unit of work | Projects, crawl credits, checks | Campaigns and calls |
Seat pricing is the difference an agency notices first. Adding four people to an Ahrefs Standard plan adds $240 a month before any prompt tracking. OppAlerts does not charge that way.
The campaign is the other structural difference. In OppAlerts you define the business, its brands, its competitors and three buyer personas once, and that definition then selects results in every report. A prospect search, a mention report and a content check all return results about the same market without being configured again. Ahrefs organizes around projects tied to a website.
What OppAlerts does that the Ahrefs pages do not describe
- Opportunity-type prospect search. The Prospect Index is searched by meaning as well as by keyword and filtered to opportunity types: guest contribution pages, resource lists, expert roundups, podcasts, industry directories, award programs, speaking submissions and others.
- Stored website contact details. Site Info returns the public contact pages, emails, phone numbers and social profiles stored for a site. A prospect can be qualified and contacted without a separate contact database.
- A news, blog and podcast index, searched for brand and competitor coverage by keyword or by meaning.
- PageRank history. Monthly link-graph measurements for a host, its www variant and its domain, so a prospect's history is visible rather than only its current value.
- Taxonomy content scoring. Content Optimizer compares a draft you paste in with up to three categories you select, one from each taxonomy. It lists the nearest categories and the phrases the draft does not contain. It reads up to 8,192 bytes, so a long article is checked section by section and the sections do not combine into one score.
Ahrefs' Content Kit add-on covers adjacent ground with AI Content Helper and AI Content Grader, and comparing those two directly is worth doing if content scoring is the deciding feature. The measurements differ. A taxonomy comparison reports how closely a draft's meaning matches a selected category. Neither product's score predicts whether an engine will cite the page.
Choosing between them
Choose Ahrefs when backlink index depth, crawl volume, multi-year history or site auditing decide the purchase, when you need an API that can write or one with a published request rate, or when you need a brand's AI visibility without configuring anything.
Choose OppAlerts when the link work is finding placements by opportunity type rather than mining an index, and when several people need access without a per-seat charge.
Many teams will keep Ahrefs for its index and add OppAlerts for the prospecting and monitoring work. The overlap is keyword tracking and AI prompts, and the per-check arithmetic above is how to price whether that overlap is worth paying for twice.
Use a real SEO assignment to check the required data and next steps. Decide which product covers that work and which capabilities you would still need alongside it.
