OppAlerts and BuzzSumo Compared

Compare OppAlerts and BuzzSumo for your next content brief or PR assignment. See how forum questions, AI answers, engagement data and journalist research support different tasks.

If you plan content or PR work, you need research that supports the particular brief, question or publication target you are working on. BuzzSumo answers what content performs and who writes about a topic. OppAlerts answers where a brand could appear next and what to do about the pages that already mention it. Both help plan content, and they draw on different material to do it.

OppAlerts publishes this comparison. BuzzSumo has a journalist database and OppAlerts does not.

What BuzzSumo sells

Plans run $199, $299 and $499 a month billed yearly. The meter is users and alerts rather than searches: Content Creation includes one user and two alerts, PR & Comms five users and five alerts. Searches are unlimited and shared across everyone on the account, refreshing monthly on the subscription date.

Content Creation includes Content Analyzer, an index of billions of content items searchable by topic, URL or domain. Trending Feeds shows posts published in the past 24 hours. Question Analyzer searches customer questions in forum posts, including Amazon, Reddit, Quora and other Q&A sites.

PR & Comms adds a Media Database for finding and contacting journalists writing about your brand, market and competitors. Coverage Reports include publication data, social engagement, mention count, placement within the article and excerpts. Slack integration is also included.

The journalist database is the clearest difference

BuzzSumo maintains a media database of journalists with the topics they cover. OppAlerts does not have one, and this is worth stating precisely because the two products both return contact information.

Site Info in OppAlerts returns contact details published on a website: contact pages, email addresses, phone numbers and social profiles, as stored when the site was collected. There are no reporter profiles, no beats and no publication rosters, and it does not verify that an address is current or deliverable.

If your work is pitching named journalists by beat, BuzzSumo supplies that and OppAlerts does not. If your work is contacting the site behind a page you found in a prospect or link report, Site Info covers it without a second subscription.

Two ways to find the questions worth writing about

Question Analyzer and the OppAlerts Content FAQs report do similar work from different sources, and the source is what should decide between them.

Question Analyzer reads forum posts, including Amazon, Reddit, Quora and Q&A sites. That is what people asked each other in public.

Content FAQs in OppAlerts draws on several collections: LLM FAQs, Search FAQs, Related Search Questions, Result Titles, News FAQs and Prospect FAQs. Those are questions appearing in AI answers, in search results and related searches, and in indexed news and prospect pages.

Neither set is more legitimate than the other. A brand whose audience argues on Reddit is better served by forum questions. A brand trying to appear in AI answers benefits from seeing the questions those answers already address. If AI search visibility is the goal, that difference matters more than the feature names suggest.

What OppAlerts adds beyond content research

Nothing on the BuzzSumo pricing page describes a backlink index, a link gap report, opportunity-type prospect search, PageRank history, AI answer tracking or keyword rank tracking.

  • Prospect Index, searched by meaning as well as keyword across opportunity types: guest contribution pages, resource lists, expert roundups, podcasts, industry directories, award programs and speaking submissions.
  • Brand Unlinked Mentions, listing pages that name the business without an observed link to it.
  • Backlinks DB: Link Gap, listing sites with observed links to competitors you enter and no observed link to you.
  • PageRank history, monthly link-graph measurements for a host, its www variant and its domain, so a publication's history is visible before you invest in it.
  • Tracking of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode answers, and Google and Bing keyword positions, where one Google request returns the organic results, the ads and the AI Overview together.
  • Content Optimizer compares a draft with up to three categories you select, one per taxonomy, and lists the phrases it does not contain. It reads up to 8,192 bytes at a time.

All of these run from one campaign definition covering the business, its brands, its competitors and three buyer personas.

Choosing between them

Choose BuzzSumo when you need to know what content performed, what is trending today, what people ask on forums, or which journalists cover your market, and when a media database is part of the purchase.

Choose OppAlerts when the questions you write for should come from AI answers and search results rather than from engagement counts, and when the point of finding a publication is to appear on it.

The two overlap on content ideation and diverge everywhere else, so a content team using BuzzSumo and a search team using OppAlerts is a normal arrangement.

Compare the products using your next research assignment. Choose the evidence and contact information that let you complete that assignment's next step.

Let’s discuss how we can work together.

An industry report, a custom dataset, a partnership; a couple of sentences is plenty. Every message comes straight to me, and I read all of them.

If it’s a fit, you’ll hear back quickly with next steps or a time to talk.
