BuzzSumo Alternatives for Content Research and PR

Compare BuzzSumo alternatives for content ideas, coverage monitoring and journalist research. See where search and AI answer data can help you prepare a content brief.

If you are reviewing BuzzSumo, identify whether the recurring need is content research, coverage monitoring or finding journalists. BuzzSumo bundles three jobs that are usually bought separately: finding content that performed, finding the questions people ask, and finding journalists. Its plans run $199, $299 and $499 a month billed yearly, metered on users and alerts rather than searches.

OppAlerts publishes this page and is one of the alternatives on it. It has no journalist database, which is the part of BuzzSumo nothing here matches.

Decide which of the three you use. Replacing all of them at once means buying two products, and the cheaper options below each cover one part well.

Meltwater, when the PR half is the reason

If you pay for BuzzSumo's Media Database and Coverage Reports, Meltwater is the upgrade rather than a saving. It sells media intelligence as a program across Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency tiers, with journalist research and distribution attached.

It publishes no prices. Its FAQ states the quote depends on modules, source and regional coverage, data and workflow volume, users, integrations, onboarding, support and contract terms. Expect a larger commitment than a BuzzSumo subscription.

Nothing cheaper in this list includes a journalist database, so if that is the module you rely on, the realistic choices are staying with BuzzSumo or moving up to Meltwater.

Frase or Surfer, when research leads straight into writing

Both cost less than BuzzSumo's entry plan and take the work further, from research into an optimized draft.

Frase starts at $39 a month billed yearly for 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month, with Content Guard monitoring 10 pages for declining Google performance. Its middle plan at $103 a month covers 3 seats with extra seats at $29, 5 sites, 40 articles and 250 audit pages, watching 75 pages.

Surfer's Standard plan costs $99 a month billed yearly. It includes creating or optimizing 360 documents and tracking 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly. It also includes 1-click content optimization, team collaboration and a plagiarism checker. Its separate AI Search Analytics line at $158 a month tracks 100 AI prompts refreshed daily with Mention Gap and Brand Sentiments, and provides MCP.

Neither has a journalist database or trending feeds, so this is a trade of PR and discovery for drafting and optimization.

Brand24, when alerts and coverage are the reason

BuzzSumo meters alerts tightly, at two and five. Brand24 sells monitoring as the product: $249, $349, $499 and $699 a month for 3, 7, 12 and 25 keywords at 2,000, 10,000, 40,000 and 100,000 mentions a month. Users are unlimited from its second plan.

It also states nine AI models in its LLM Listening module, provides MCP and API integration, and adds sentiment in all languages, Demographics, Anomaly Detection and Context Search. If your BuzzSumo alerts are really brand monitoring, this is the specialist.

OppAlerts, when the questions should come from search and AI answers

OppAlerts has no journalist database, no trending feed of viral posts, and no index of content ranked by social engagement. If Content Analyzer or the Media Database is why you subscribe, it does not replace them.

Its closest equivalent is Content FAQs, which draws questions from LLM FAQs, Search FAQs, Related Search Questions, Result Titles, News FAQs and Prospect FAQs. Where BuzzSumo's Question Analyzer reads forum posts on Amazon, Reddit and Quora, this reads what AI answers and search results already address. For a team writing to appear in AI answers, that source difference is the point.

Beyond questions, one campaign definition holding the business, its brands, its competitors and three buyer personas provides context for each of these:

  • A prospect index searched by meaning across opportunity types including guest contribution pages, resource lists, expert roundups, podcasts and directories.
  • Stored public contact details for those sites.
  • A news, blog and podcast index.
  • Pages naming the brand without an observed link.
  • A link gap report.
  • Monthly PageRank history.
  • A content optimizer comparing a draft with categories you select.
  • Tracking of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode alongside Google and Bing positions.
