If you lead a content team, you need a draft assessment that helps editors answer a specific question about the writing. OppAlerts publishes this page and sells one of the products on it. Every vendor fact comes from that vendor's own pages, read on September 5, 2026.
Products in this category all return a score for a draft, and the scores are not measuring the same thing. Understanding what each one compares your text against matters more than the price, because a score against the wrong reference is worse than no score at all.
What each score compares your draft against
Against pages that perform for a term. Surfer, Frase and Clearscope work in this tradition. You give the tool a target term, it examines what currently performs for that term, and it reports how your draft compares, usually with terms to add. Frase describes its own work as scoring pages and improving their Google rankings.
This is the right tool when you are writing for a specific query and competing pages exist. It answers whether your article covers what the competing pages cover.
Against a category you choose. OppAlerts Content Optimizer compares the meaning of your text with categories selected from 11 taxonomies containing 25,622 categories, including 4,117 US cities. You choose up to three, one from each taxonomy. It returns the ten nearest categories per taxonomy, shows the intended category's position separately when it falls outside that list, and lists phrases related to that category which the draft does not contain.
This answers a different question: does this writing read as being about the subject, addressed to the audience, or relevant to the place you intended? It does not require a target term or competing pages.
An example separates them. A page written to help finance directors choose a payroll provider can score well against the term "payroll services" because the vocabulary matches. Compared with an audience taxonomy, it may return payroll and bookkeeping services as its nearest category rather than corporate finance. That result indicates writing about the supplier rather than for the buyer. A term-based score does not report that, because the words are present either way.
Neither type of score predicts whether an AI engine or a search engine will cite the page. Both measure text against a reference. Any product implying otherwise is overclaiming, and that includes this one.
What each product costs and includes
| Product | Price | Content allowance | Prompt tracking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frase | $39/mo yearly | 10 articles, 50 audit pages; Content Guard watches 10 pages | Add as you go |

| Surfer Standard | $99/mo yearly | 360 documents created or optimized | 25 prompts, weekly |
| Surfer AI Search Analytics | $158/mo yearly | Tracking line only | 100 prompts, daily, with MCP |

Compare the plan structure as well as the price. Surfer sells content and tracking as separate plans, so buying both comes to $257 a month; Clearscope bundles them into one. Frase charges $29 a month for each extra seat, and Clearscope keeps drafts at 20 a month on both published plans. A high-output team should check that limit before choosing on price.
Writing, and who does it
Every product in this category except OppAlerts writes or drafts. Surfer creates and optimizes documents with a plagiarism checker. Frase researches and drafts. Clearscope produces drafts and topic explorations. SE Ranking includes an AI Writer. Profound's Agents module goes furthest, generating briefs and full drafts and publishing approved ones to a CMS.
OppAlerts does not write, rewrite or publish anything. It reads text you paste in, up to 8,192 bytes at a time. Review longer articles in sections; the results do not combine into one article score.
If the reason for buying is producing more content, that is a real distinction and it does not favor OppAlerts.
Local and audience relevance
One capability has no equivalent in the other products here. Alongside subject categories, OppAlerts includes audience, industry, product and US city taxonomies, so a draft can be compared with a city rather than a topic.
The practical use is local content. A service page can name a city repeatedly and still read as generic. Comparing it against the cities taxonomy returns the nearest city by meaning, which may not be the one you named. It also lists phrases associated with the intended city that the draft lacks. A term-based score does not detect this, because the city name is present.
What it cannot do is verify that anything the page says about that city is true. It measures meaning, not facts, and inventing local detail to raise a score would be a mistake.

If you are choosing between a term-based score and a category comparison, the question is what you are aiming at: a query with competing pages, or a subject and an audience. Many teams have a use for both, and the two do not conflict.
