Meltwater Alternatives for Media Monitoring and PR Research

Compare Meltwater alternatives for media monitoring, journalist research and publication outreach. Identify which communications functions each option can replace.

If you are reviewing a communications contract, you need to identify which monitoring, research and distribution tasks the replacement must support. Meltwater is bought as a program rather than a subscription. Its own pricing FAQ explains the quote: modules, source and regional coverage, data and workflow volume, users, integrations, onboarding, support and contract terms.

OppAlerts publishes this page and is one of the alternatives on it. It is not a PR platform and has no journalist database.

Teams look elsewhere when the contract is larger than the usage, when only one module is used, or when the work has shifted from press coverage to earned placements. Which of those applies decides the shortlist, because Meltwater bundles monitoring, journalist research and distribution and few alternatives sell all three.

BuzzSumo, the cheapest published route to a journalist database

If journalist research is the module you use, BuzzSumo is the most direct answer with a visible price. Its PR & Comms plan at $299 a month includes five users, five alerts and unlimited searches shared across the account. It also includes a Media Database for finding and contacting journalists writing about your brand, market and competitors.

It also includes Coverage Reports giving publication data, social engagement, mention count, placement within the article as headline, first paragraph or full article, and excerpts, plus Slack integration for alerts. The $199 Content Creation plan below it drops the media database and keeps Content Analyzer, Trending Feeds and Question Analyzer.

What you give up compared with Meltwater is regional breadth, distribution and the account relationship.

Talkwalker or Brandwatch, when breadth is the reason

Both are quote-based purchases at a similar scale to Meltwater.

Talkwalker states 150 million data sources, more than 30 social platforms, 187 languages and 196 countries, with unlimited users on every Lumen plan. Those are its own figures. It suits a team whose brand is discussed across many markets.

Brandwatch adds two lines Meltwater's pricing page does not name: Social Media Management for publishing and replying, and Influencer Marketing, alongside Consumer Intelligence for analysts. If your team both listens and publishes, that consolidation is the reason to look.

Brand24 or Mention, when the requirement has narrowed

Brand24 publishes its prices: $249, $349, $499 and $699 a month for 3, 7, 12 and 25 keywords at 2,000, 10,000, 40,000 and 100,000 mentions a month. Users are unlimited from the second plan. It states nine AI models in its LLM Listening module and provides MCP and API integration, along with sentiment in all languages, Demographics, Anomaly Detection and Context Search.

Mention sells alerts and the mentions they return with Boolean search and review monitoring. Check its FAQ note that Publish and Respond have been progressively deprecated in favor of Agorapulse before assuming it covers replying.

Both are monitoring products without journalist databases or distribution, so they replace one part of Meltwater.

OppAlerts, for earned placements rather than press coverage

OppAlerts is not a PR tool. It has no journalist database, no media list, no press release distribution and no social listening. A communications team replacing Meltwater's PR modules should look at BuzzSumo or another media database, not here.

It fits the adjacent job. Where PR earns coverage by pitching reporters, OppAlerts finds places a brand can appear and be linked from, and supplies the detail needed to approach them.

One campaign holds the business, its brands, its competitors and three buyer personas, and that definition provides context for each report:

  • A prospect index searched by meaning across opportunity types: guest contribution pages, resource lists, expert roundups, podcasts, industry directories, award programs and speaking submissions.
  • The stored public contact pages, emails, phone numbers and social profiles for those sites.
  • A news, blog and podcast index covering the brand and its competitors.
  • Pages naming the brand without an observed link, and a link gap report against named competitors.
  • Monthly PageRank history, a content optimizer, and tracking of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode alongside Google and Bing positions.

Use Meltwater's own quote factors as the brief for every vendor you approach: the same regions, source breadth, data volume, user count, integrations and contract length. Without that, the quotes are not comparable. How source coverage changes a monitoring tool covers the source question in more detail.

Before reducing or replacing the contract, confirm the required sources, regions and team workflows. Evaluate quotes against that written scope.

Let’s discuss how we can work together.

An industry report, a custom dataset, a partnership; a couple of sentences is plenty. Every message comes straight to me, and I read all of them.

If it’s a fit, you’ll hear back quickly with next steps or a time to talk.
