OppAlerts and Meltwater Compared

Compare Meltwater and OppAlerts for your PR assignment. Distinguish journalist research and distribution from publication research, unlinked mentions and placement opportunities.

If you choose tools for PR work, you need to distinguish a communications team's operational requirements from a particular coverage or placement research task. Meltwater is media intelligence bought as a program: monitoring across sources and regions, journalist research, and distribution, priced per organization after a conversation. OppAlerts is a self-serve product that indexes published pages and turns brand coverage into link prospects, contacts and content decisions.

OppAlerts publishes this comparison. Meltwater has a journalist database and press distribution; OppAlerts has neither.

These are usually bought by different departments, and the comparison is about which job you are staffing.

How Meltwater is priced, and what to ask

Meltwater lists Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency tiers without amounts. Its pricing FAQ describes tailored quotes based on modules, source and regional coverage, data and workflow volume, and user count. Integrations, onboarding, support needs and contract terms also affect the quote.

That is a useful list to take into any monitoring purchase, because it names the variables that affect a price. Before comparing Meltwater with anything, fix those variables: the same regions, the same source breadth, the same expected volume, the same user count and the same contract length.

OppAlerts is bought self-serve, with a weekly call allowance where one call is one tracked prompt or keyword, on one provider, on one day. It is not sold by the seat. A comparison of the two on paper is not possible until Meltwater has quoted your brief.

What Meltwater does that OppAlerts does not

  • A journalist database and PR distribution. Meltwater's business includes researching journalists and reaching them. OppAlerts has no journalist database and does not distribute anything.
  • Social listening across social platforms, which OppAlerts does not do.
  • Breadth of sources and regions sold as a variable you can buy more of.
  • Onboarding, support and an account relationship, priced into the contract.

What Site Info is, and what it is not

This distinction decides whether OppAlerts is relevant to a PR team at all, so it is worth stating exactly.

Site Info returns contact information published on a website: contact pages, email addresses, phone numbers and social profiles, as stored when the site was collected. It is a lookup against pages that already exist on the open web.

It is not a journalist database. There are no reporter profiles, no beats, no publication rosters and no editorial contacts curated by a research team. It does not verify that an address is current or that mail to it will be delivered. If your work requires pitching named reporters by beat, Meltwater or a comparable media database supplies that and OppAlerts does not.

What Site Info does supply is the practical detail needed to contact a website you found in a link or prospect report, without adding a separate subscription for that step.

Where OppAlerts covers work Meltwater does not describe

Nothing on the Meltwater pricing page describes a backlink index, a link gap report, opportunity-type prospect search, PageRank history, AI answer tracking or keyword rank tracking.

  • Brand Unlinked Mentions, listing pages that name the business without an observed link to it.
  • Backlinks DB: Link Gap, listing sites with observed links to competitors you enter and no observed link to you.
  • Prospect Index, searched by meaning as well as keyword across opportunity types: guest contribution pages, resource lists, expert roundups, podcasts, industry directories, award programs and speaking submissions.
  • PageRank history, monthly link-graph measurements for a host, its www variant and its domain.
  • Tracking of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode answers, and Google and Bing keyword positions.
  • Content Optimizer compares a draft with up to three categories you select and lists the phrases it does not contain.

These run from one campaign definition covering the business, its brands, its competitors and three buyer personas, so the same market context selects results across every report.

Choosing between them

Choose Meltwater when the job is media relations: monitoring at breadth across regions, researching and reaching journalists, distributing news, and reporting on coverage to an organization that expects a contract and support.

Choose OppAlerts when you identify the publications yourself rather than working from a journalist roster, and when the placements you want are the ones a publication accepts through a stated process.

A communications team and a search team can reasonably run one each. The overlap is limited to the fact that both will notice a page mentioning the brand.

Before comparing costs, specify the sources, contact research and distribution work required. That lets you assess each offer against the service your team actually needs.
