If you prepare competitive research, you need to know where relevant businesses are discussed and why those pages mention them. Competitor Mentions and Competitor Links use the organizations marked Competitor in your campaign. They show where those businesses are named, and where indexed pages link to their hosts.
Label organizations correctly first
Keep competitor names and hosts specific. An organization that publishes reviews of the market should normally be labeled Publisher rather than included as a direct competing supplier.
That distinction matters beyond tidiness. A publisher in your competitor list makes every gap report treat the publication as a rival, so pages linking to it appear as competitive placements rather than as the placement opportunities they are.
Research where competitors appear
Watching a competitor for its own sake produces anxiety and little work. Every page naming a competitor is a publication that covers your market and is willing to name a vendor, which is most of a prospect qualification already done.
Read the report as a list of places rather than a list of events.
Find the reason for the appearance
Open a result to distinguish an editorial comparison, a directory entry, a partnership announcement or a passing reference. Those require different responses.
| What you find | What it is worth |
|---|---|
| A roundup naming several competitors, not you | The most actionable row. The audience is yours and the format includes vendors. |
| A comparison between two competitors | What your buyers read when deciding. Your absence is a positioning problem. |
| A directory entry | Check the inclusion condition; it is often membership. |
| A partnership announcement | Not available by asking. Note the relationship. |
| A passing reference | Low value alone. Note the publication if it recurs. |
Working a roundup you are absent from
Read what the piece is for, check whether it is still maintained, and find the inclusion criteria, which are sometimes stated and often inferable from what the listed companies share.
If all three named competitors are enterprise products and you sell to small teams, your absence is correct and pursuing it wastes the relationship.
Use the right collection
Use the News Index for recent coverage and the Prospect Index for the broader stored collection. The search-result views read the campaign's collected results and do not perform a fresh search each time you open them.
For links, Brand Link Gap finds indexed pages that link to competitors without linking to your owned hosts. Backlinks DB: Link Gap makes a site-level comparison in the backlink collection. Their results differ because the collections and comparison units differ.
What an appearance does not tell you
It tells you where to investigate. It does not reveal a placement fee, a private agreement, or the cause of a later search position.
Mention volume does not measure sales. A competitor may receive more mentions because it has a press function, without winning more of the deals you compete for.
When selecting a competitive follow-up, record the source passage and the specific content or publication question it raises.
