If you plan digital PR work, you need to distinguish finding a journalist from researching a publication or contribution opportunity. OppAlerts publishes this page and sells one of the products on it. OppAlerts does not have a journalist database.
Digital PR research splits into two jobs that use different data and are often confused when buying: finding the journalist, and finding the placement. Tools that do one rarely do the other well.
The distinction that decides your purchase
A journalist database is a curated record of reporters: who they are, which publication they write for, what they cover, and how to reach them. It is maintained by a research team, and its value is in the curation. BuzzSumo, Meltwater and, for influencers, BuzzStream sell this.
Public website contact data is what a website publishes about itself: a contact page, a submissions page, a general email address, a phone number, social profiles. It is collected from the open web, and its value is coverage rather than curation.
These are not substitutes. If your work is pitching a named technology reporter at a national title, a journalist database is the tool, and public site contacts will not help. For resource submissions, awards, podcast pitches and link requests, the site's published contact instructions usually provide what you need. A journalist database will not list those details.
Most digital PR programs do both jobs, which is why teams commonly buy one tool from each side.
Journalist databases
BuzzSumo is the cheapest published route. Its PR & Comms plan at $299 a month billed yearly includes five users, five alerts, and unlimited shared searches. Its Media Database supports finding and contacting journalists writing about your brand, market and competitors. It adds Coverage Reports giving publication data, social engagement, mention count, placement as headline, first paragraph or full article, and excerpts, plus Slack integration. Its lower Content Creation plan at $199 drops the media database.
Meltwater sells journalist research and distribution as part of a media intelligence program across Starter, Pro, Enterprise and Agency tiers, with no published amounts. Its FAQ states the quote depends on modules, source and regional coverage, data and workflow volume, users, integrations, onboarding, support and contract terms.
BuzzStream Discovery is an influencer database within its outreach CRM. Plans run from $49 a month for one user and 500 stored contacts up to $999 or more for 12 or more users and 300,000 or more contacts. It also advertises ListIQ, an AI-driven media list building product priced separately.
Coverage monitoring, so you know who already writes about you
Brandwatch, Talkwalker and Brand24 all monitor coverage. Brand24 publishes its prices: $249 to $699 a month for 3 to 25 keywords at 2,000 to 100,000 mentions a month, with sentiment in all languages and Anomaly Detection. BuzzSumo's Coverage Reports serve the same purpose for teams already using it.
This matters for PR research specifically because a reporter who has covered you before is a better prospect than a cold contact, and a publication that mentioned you without linking is the easiest placement to convert.
Reaching people, and verifying that you can
Hunter finds addresses at a domain and tests whether they accept mail. Plans include 50 free credits or 2,000, 10,000 and 25,000 credits a month, with unlimited users. Verification costs half a credit. Pitchbox and BuzzStream send and manage the campaigns, metering campaigns run and contacts stored respectively.
No product on this page except Hunter verifies deliverability, and that includes OppAlerts.
Where OppAlerts fits
To be explicit: OppAlerts has no journalist database. There are no reporter profiles, no beats, no publication rosters, and no editorial contacts curated by a research team. It does not distribute press releases and it does not verify that an address is current or deliverable.
Site Info searches records for around 40 million sites and returns the contact information published on a website, as stored when that site was collected: contact pages, email addresses, phone numbers and social profiles. No fixed refresh interval is promised, so the current site must be checked before use.
What it contributes to digital PR is the earned-placement half of the work, which journalist databases do not cover. Search the Prospect Index by meaning or keyword, then filter by opportunity type. Types include award programs, speaking submissions, podcast guest opportunities, expert roundups, publications accepting opinion pieces, industry directories and resource lists. Searching by meaning returns relevant pages that never use your wording.
Three further reports support the same work. Brand Unlinked Mentions lists publications that already named the business without an observed link, which is the shortest path from coverage to a link. PageRank history shows monthly link-graph measurements for a publication, so you can judge whether it is gaining or losing standing before investing in the relationship. The News Index searches indexed news, blog and podcast content for coverage of the brand, its competitors or a topic.
All of it runs from one campaign definition covering the business, its brands, its competitors and three buyer personas.

A workable pairing for most digital PR teams is one journalist database and one placement research tool, since neither side covers the other's work.
Evaluate the tool using a placement your team intends to pursue. Check whether the research identifies a suitable publication and a route for your approach.
