Surfer Alternatives for Content Optimization and AI Visibility

Choose a Surfer alternative by the content work you need: drafting, review or AI tracking. Compare term-based guidance with checks for topic, audience and local relevance.

If you are reviewing Surfer, identify whether your team needs content production, draft assessment, AI tracking or a combination of those tasks. Surfer sells content and tracking on separate plans. Content creation and optimization costs $99 a month billed yearly for 360 documents with 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly. AI Search Analytics costs $158 a month for 100 AI prompts refreshed daily with Mention Gap, Brand Sentiments, five Brand Spaces and MCP access.

OppAlerts publishes this page and is one of the alternatives on it. It does not write or optimize documents.

Teams look elsewhere when they are paying for both lines and using one, when the document allowance runs out, or when the scoring method does not match what they are trying to write for. Decide which before comparing prices, because these products bundle the two jobs very differently.

Clearscope, when you want content and tracking in one plan

Clearscope is a close alternative, because it puts both jobs in a single plan instead of two. Essentials at $129 a month covers 50 tracked prompts, 50 pages, 20 monthly topic explorations and 20 monthly drafts. Business at $399 a month covers 300 tracked prompts, 300 pages, 50 topic explorations and 20 drafts, with a dedicated account manager. Enterprise adds custom credits, crawler whitelisting and single sign-on.

Compare that with buying both Surfer lines. If you need document optimization and daily prompt tracking together, one Clearscope plan may cover what two Surfer plans do, and its page states no contracts and a 14-day trial.

Note that Clearscope's drafts allowance stays at 20 a month on both plans, so heavy drafting teams should check that limit against their output.

Frase, when the cost has to come down

Frase is the cheapest content optimization entry point found here, at $39 a month billed yearly for 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month, with Content Guard monitoring 10 pages for declining Google performance. Its middle plan at $103 a month covers 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles and 250 audit pages, watching 75 pages, and its upper plan at $239 covers 5 seats and up to 10 domains. Extra seats are $29 a month.

Content Guard has no equivalent in the other products here: it watches published pages for decline and tells you which need refreshing. Note Frase's own positioning names Google rather than AI answers, so if AI visibility is the reason you bought Surfer, this is a narrower product.

Semrush or SE Ranking, when content sits inside a platform

SE Ranking is the cheapest option for writing and tracking together. Its $129 monthly plan includes an AI Writer, 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts tracked daily. It also includes 10 projects and 250,000 audit pages a month. Against two Surfer plans at $257 combined, that is a considerable difference in what is bundled.

Semrush includes content optimization from its Pro+ plan at $299 a month, with 1,500 keywords and 100 prompts tracked daily, Site Audit and MCP access. Both are broader products than Surfer, and neither is a specialist content editor in the same way.

OppAlerts, when the question is category fit rather than ranking pages

OppAlerts does not write. There is no drafting, no rewriting, no plagiarism checker and no publishing, so it does not replace Surfer's content creation at all.

What it replaces is the scoring step, and it scores against something different. Content Optimizer compares the meaning of a draft with categories you select from a taxonomy, returning the nearest categories per taxonomy and the phrases related to your chosen category that the draft does not contain. Surfer optimizes against guidance derived from pages already ranking for a target term.

Choose by what you are aiming at. If the target is a search term and its competing pages, term-based guidance is the right tool. If the target is a subject, an audience, an industry, a product type or a city, a category comparison tells you whether the writing reads that way. The editor reads up to 8,192 bytes, so long articles are checked in sections.

Beyond scoring, one campaign definition provides context for each of these:

  • A prospect index searched by meaning across opportunity types including guest contribution pages, resource lists, roundups, podcasts and directories.
  • Stored public contact details for those sites.
  • A news, blog and podcast index.
  • Content FAQs drawn from LLM answers, search results, news and prospect pages.
  • A link gap report and unlinked mentions.
  • Monthly PageRank history.
  • Tracking of ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode alongside Google and Bing positions.

When comparing these, count documents and prompts separately, because some vendors sell them in one plan and others in two. How to compare AI search tool costs covers the prompt side of that arithmetic.

Use a representative content assignment and tracking workload to evaluate the alternatives. Check which plan covers the work before comparing its cost.

Let’s discuss how we can work together.

An industry report, a custom dataset, a partnership; a couple of sentences is plenty. Every message comes straight to me, and I read all of them.

If it’s a fit, you’ll hear back quickly with next steps or a time to talk.
