How to Use This Guide

Reading paths, terminology, and updates

This guide teaches AI Search Optimization: the work of getting your brand seen, cited, and recommended by AI systems like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Copilot. It covers how these systems actually work, how to earn visibility in their answers, how to buy it where it is now for sale, how to measure all of it, and how to run the discipline as a program.

It is written for two readers at the same time: a marketer new to the field who needs the whole map, and a veteran SEO who wants what is genuinely different. Nothing is dumbed down for the first reader, and nothing is hand-waved past the second. The one thing assumed is that you know what an LLM is; every other term gets defined the first time it appears.

Three ways to read it

The afternoon path. Ten chapters are tagged "afternoon" in the left nav. Read this page plus those ten, in order, and you will have a complete working map of the discipline in one sitting: what AI search is, what to call it, how the machine answers, what the data says drives visibility, how to measure it, how to build a strategy, and what to do in your first 90 days. Every untagged chapter goes deeper on something the path introduced, so you can return for depth exactly where your work needs it.

The veteran path. If you have been doing SEO for years, read Parts I and II in full, with three chapters as the core: What Carries Over from SEO and What Breaks, Model Memory and Live Retrieval, and What Actually Correlates with AI Search Visibility. Then read Links: The Signal That Refuses to Die. Those four will recalibrate your instincts; the rest of the book will feel familiar in structure and new in detail.

The practitioner path. Mid-project and need answers now: Part III onward works as a manual. Every practice chapter names the mechanism it relies on and links back to it, so you can start where the work is and backfill the theory as needed.

The terms this book commits to

AI search is the channel. AI search visibility is the outcome you achieve and measure. AI Search Optimization is the work you do, and it encompasses everything, including classic SEO and paid search. The industry also uses GEO, AEO, LLMO, AI SEO, and a pile of other names for overlapping parts of the same work; Chapter 3 sorts the whole mess out.

How this guide stays current

AI search changes monthly: models ship, surfaces get redesigned, ad programs launch. This guide is revised on that clock, monthly where the field demands it and quarterly at minimum. Product-level specifics are written as snapshots; the mechanics and the evidence are the durable part. The changelog lives in the Resources part, in Tools, Templates, and Checklists, so you can see exactly what changed since your last visit.
